The Octopus Personnel Temp of the Year 2018, John Prout, discusses his reaction to the award, his new permanent role with Hillbrush and his advice for other temps.

 

“It still hasn’t sunk in,”John Prout explains when asked about being awarded Octopus Personnel Temp of the Year 2018 last week.  Voted for by clients, candidates and Octopus Personnel staff, John was surprised at his new permanent post at Hillbrush with a card, certificate, £50 worth of shopping vouchers and bottle of Whiskey.

“Everything has just fallen into place.  I’ve had support – support from Octopus, support from the assignments.  I still can’t believe I won, but it goes to show what you can achieve if you act with integrity and always put your best foot forward.”

John moved into the local area three and a half years ago and registered with Octopus Personnel to find work.  He describes the registration process as taking time.  “Not because you were filling in paperwork, but because they wanted to get to know you… to understand what you were looking for… to build that relationship.  And it was that process, I think, that really paid off for me.”  John has had a wide range of assignments with Octopus – from a day, to a week, to a month, to a year.  What they all had in common was how John felt being sent to each assignment.

“I knew exactly what was expected of me.  I went to some really established businesses and I always had clear training, especially in relation to Health & Safety.  I knew what was required of me so I could be successful.  I always felt part of the team and I knew who to turn to if I had any questions.  It is comforting to always have that back up – with the companies and with Octopus, it is seamless support.  Octopus fitted me to the right companies – and made sure I had the right training and experience to enable me to succeed.”

John’s latest assignment has become a permanent job.  “I am now working at Hillbrush, making a range of brushes.  They are very progressive with training.  I am confident in production and packaging.  You have enough training and know-how to succeed, but there is always someone to ask if you need to.”

John is very modest about his own achievements and work ethic, but when pushed to offer advice to others, he talks about the reciprocal relationship of employment.  “People are all businesses best resources, so use them.  You are working with experts.  A lot of temps become permanent because they show their integrity and hard work.  Companies respond if you show them.  Do your best.  Throw yourself into each assignment.  Don’t be afraid to ask questions.  Listen to what you are taught and the rewards are there!”

The surprise of the award still hasn’t sunk in for John and the certificate isn’t up on the wall yet.  “We are absolutely delighted to award Temp of the Year 2018 to John,” explains Sandra Smart, Managing Director of Octopus Personnel.  “He has always been such a pleasure to work with and he has represented Octopus in a very positive and professional manner.  To this day, we still get clients saying, ‘I don’t suppose John is available?’  When we explain he is settled in a permanent position, the response is always, ‘Can you get me another John then?’  Thank you John.  You are a star.”
